Biography
A native of Huntsville, AL, Mr. Hawkins graduated from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 1993 with a Bachelor's degree in Optical Science. Shortly thereafter, he accepted a position as a software engineer in the Center for Applied Optics at the University. Mr. Hawkins worked primarily on performance prediction software for NASA's Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (now called the Chandra Observatory) project during his six and a half years at the CAO. In July of 2000, Mr. Hawkins accepted an appointment to the Information Technology & Systems Center, also at the University. Since that time, he has worked primarily on mission support software for the AMSR-E instrument on NASA's Aqua satellite. (See the resume - Word document.) When not at work, Mr. Hawkins devotes a great deal of time in support of his church where he serves in a number of leadership roles. He is an ordained minister and serves on the pastor's advisory board. A musician, Mr. Hawkins serves as a lead vocalist for the church's worship team and occasionally as a percussionist. He also produces audio soundtracks for use by the worship team. Mr. Hawkins serves as a teacher for age groups ranging from 6 years to adult and he has been a speaker for Wednesday evening as well as Sunday morning services. When asked about his hobbies, Mr. Hawkins replied, "Work and church keep me pretty busy. But I'm always looking for opportunities to get out and photograph events, architecture, and nature. I try to hit the gym twice a week and I enjoy traveling whether I'm driving my car or flying commercial."
