My Car Featured in the April 2001 Issue of Grassroots Motorsports Magazine!
In 2000, the BMW Car Club of America (BMWCCA) held its annual Oktoberfest in and around Greer, South Carolina, home of BMW Manufacturing USA. I had registered for the weeklong event and was prepared to make the trip with a friend who would be driving his 1988 E30 M3. Out of the blue, I received an email from Grassroots Motorsports (GRM) magazine. Their managing editor wanted to know if I'd be interested in having my car appear in an article they were doing on BMW's M-cars. (Apparently Wynne Smith, executive director of BMWCCA, saw that I was bringing my M5 over for Oktoberfest and thought I might be willing to participate in GRM's review.) Are you kidding? Just tell me where to show up!
To make a long story short, I arrived at Road Atlanta on a beautiful Sunday morning (2000-10-01) where GRM had managed to corral one example of every M-car produced to date, including the extremely rare M1. I had the chance to get my car out on the track for numerous touring laps and several of GRM's staff took it out for a spin in traffic and on the back roads. There were numerous photo ops on and off the track. BMW's M-brand manager, Tom Salkowsky, was present along with racing legend Hans Stuck. To top it all off, the GRM staff took us out for a great barbeque lunch! Here, I've reproduced the magazine cover and the page with the photo and article on my M5. Needless to say, this was a proud moment for me. Many thanks to GRM's Managing Editor, David Wallens for permission to reprint this article and to Wynne Smith for putting my name in the hat in the first place. Go Back
